2018 Heirloom Sessions

"Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength." Betty Friedan

While I'm still trying to finish up my end of the year sessions and editing,  I want to let you know that  my Heirloom Sessions for 2018 are open on Tuesday, November 28th, 2017.  I have been doing these very occasionally for the last couple of years, but this year I'm taking a huge leap to specialize in this type of session.  Thank you for your understanding and support as I make these big changes.  I am absolutely indebted to the people who have traveled with me on my photography journey thus far.

After you have read this entire post,  please email me at sarschro@yahoo.com and put HEIRLOOM SESSION in the subject line so that I know you are interested in booking or have a question regarding them.  With the holiday email season in full swing, I don't want to miss the most important ones!

Heirloom sessions are geared towards your parent(s) or grandparent(s).  This is about them in or around their home.  A few years ago, I captured my in-laws in their home.  Just them.  Doing really normal, everyday things.  They had breakfast, did the dishes, read the paper, played boggle, got the mail.  At that point they were just entertaining the idea of downsizing and moving out of the home they had lived in for 45 years.  I had always taken pictures of them with the kids and with family milling about over the holidays, but never just the two of them in their space.  I asked them if they would let me follow them around for a morning and they obliged with only a few weird looks.  My in-laws have since moved and I treasure those photos because not only did I capture the two of them, I captured them in the space that we miss dearly.  In Heirloom Sessions I will capture not only the person, but their treasured spaces and objects.  For some, this might be about capturing the details, hobbies, collections, gardens, workshops, tinkering in the garage or their favorite path around the neighborhood. For others, this may be about the beauty and the struggle of growing older. Aging is something we are taught to fight, but it comes with a story we should try to view as a gift.  I would be honored to capture this story for you.

While every session will look different, there are a few stipulations that will make these sessions the most unique and powerful they can be. The biggest thing I want to clarify. . . THIS IS NOT AN EXTENDED FAMILY SESSION.  You know those big family photos where everyone is beautifully dressed, coordinated, lined up and looking at the camera?  Those are treasured photo favorites and are often requested, but that is not what this session is about.  That doesn't mean that other family members can't be involved in a portion of the photos, but I really want a big focus to be on the couple or individual.  That said, candid photos with friends and family are definitely ok! If you are looking for a photographer who does traditional extended family sessions,  I would be happy to pass on a list of other photographers who do them.  If you have any questions about how involving other family members would look, please feel free to message me with any questions.

When I had the idea of doing these sort of sessions as a specialty, I reached out to a few friends to get ideas for names.  I wanted something to set them apart from family sessions. They threw out a great list of options, but when someone said Heirloom. . . I instantly knew that would be it.  These photos are not just for the people I photograph.  This documentation is a gift for our children and their children.  This is capturing a slice of life that is rarely captured.  When we are young, we snap and celebrate every milestone.  Then. . . we stop.  Aging can be difficult, but it should stil be celebrated. There is still beauty in the stories of our parents, grandparents or elderly friends.

Sessions are currently set at $350.00 + sales tax.  (returning clients will receive a discount.)
A retainer fee of $75.00 is due at time of booking to hold your spot.  The remaining balance is due on the day of the session, but I would be happy to arrange a payment plan to make the fee more manageable. Please let me know if you would like to make this type of arrangement at the time of booking and we will iron out the details.
Included in this session are my time and skill in planning, photographing and editing this session.
50+ mix of color and black and white photographs sent to you in a digital download to print where you like.  I have places I use that I would recommend for printing and creating gifts for your family.

Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about my new specialty.  Heirloom sessions will be scheduled on weekday mornings, but I will have a few early evenings and weekends available if that works better. I live in St. Paul, MN, but would happy to discuss travel to surrounding cities if it works for my schedule (mileage fees will be added.)  Feel free to send me questions to further determine if this is a good fit for you and your loved ones.  You can email me at sarschro@yahoo.com with HEIRLOOM SESSION in the subject line or message me on Facebook.  I look forward to working with you to create an heirloom for your family.
